Solo Twin 100cc ...... 1965 |
"Kreigspferd" Warhorse. Not as fast as todays saws my Solo twin 100cc was built for only one reason and it's a story in itself. When i had my Saw repair shop i was an agent or dealer for Solo Chainsaws, the Manager/rep of Solo Horst Schragle used to call by every month or so and of cause discuss sales and stock levels along with the occassional bit of chit chat to fill in time which Horst reakoned he never had enough of ........ but during one lively discussion Horst told me he had out here in Australia the German Solo Twin works saw and he had it with him and proceeded to show me this saw complete with chamber and a bigger Tillerton fitted to it .......... Horst was proud of the saw and assured me it was the fastest twin in Australia. Now i didn't doubt Horst as at that stage i'd only ever seen one Solo twin in my life but assured him that if ever i were to find one then he might have a race on his hands. A few months later i had a customer dragging a Solo Twin by the starter rope enter my shop wanting the saw repaired Hmmm ..... no spark and a broken starter spring and at that stage no spares as these 1965 model saws were obsolete and by quite a few years so i talked the fella into trading it in on a newer model Solo after a reasonable trade-in was given. Horst had his race although at this stage i had to source the needed bits to get the Twin going so after many many phone calls i managed to get 2 more complete Twins and new rings and a small box of assorted parts yep things were looking good there would be a race to check Horst out. I made a new intake manifold to take or mount a Mac BDC carby, fitted up the saw with 2 electronic ignition units made by Atom industry's of Australia as this saw sports two coils origionally and ported the saw and raised the exhausts for a few more revs we had a racer. I got GB Australia to make me a new 3/8" sprocket nose bar as then i didn't and still don't know where i would get a roller nose to suit the Twin. Now the saw ran like a charm and the races at Eden NSW wheren't far away in time. Next i have to get Horst to race me and i asked Horst if he was taking his twin to Eden for the races yes was his answer but i didn't let on i had mine and it was ready to test out the German works saw. I had a friend of mine buff and polish all the easly removed covers and shrouds and the saw looked a million dollars if i were to be beaten it would be with something shiney in my hands. Eden 1986 i took two saws my Twin and my Mac 91b/1 as i had two birds to kill so i needed two stones ( saws ). Saturday was an easy day were myself and a few others sat around telling wild and wooley stories having the odd cold beer when Gordon Clark said to me to give the Twin a start as Horst had gone into town and therefore wouldn't hear or see the Twin, so this fella gave the saw a run and as luck would have it Horst reappeared just at the wrong time as far as we were concerned and witnessed how the saw ran through a log. Horst was not impressed at not being told about some competition he may have to face the next day ........... Hmmmm sorry Horst. With a snort and a quick about turn Horst repacked his car and took his saw home and i had won the race by default. The next day Sunday i beat Gordon in the Hotsaw event, so Eden had two very unhappy Chappies drive home and Mc Bob with a grin from ear to ear. P.S. I still have my Twin but it adores my lounge-room in pride of place and will be there for many more years to come. Mc Bob. |
